PHONE SYNCHRONIZATION TO UTC FOR CHRONO-LOG CLOCK/CALENDARS

The Phone Synchronization option in the Chrono-log K-Series Multi-System Clock/Calendars provides unattended time synchronization to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) with an accuracy of 10 milliseconds for transportation systems, computers, communication and control systems, and time display systems in industrial, scientific, military, radio, TV, satellite tracking, legal and financial applications.

The Phone Synchronization option is a plug-in card installed in the K- Series Clock/Calendar. This low cost option eliminates the need for expensive antenna installations and eliminates all problems associated with radio reception of time standard broadcasts.

With the Phone Synchronization option, the Chrono-log Master Clock/Calendar automatically calls the ACTS system at the US. National Institute of Standards and Technology using a shared phone line. It reads the time from the NIST master time standard which provides the time to WWV, WWVH, WWVB, ACTS, Loran-C and the GOES satellite. Time and date in the Clock are set with an accuracy of 10 milliseconds.

In addition, with the Phone Synchronization option, remotely located Sub- Master Clocks can synchronize to the Master Clock by periodic local phone calls, eliminating the need for long, expensive cable runs. In a Master/Sub-Master configuration, the Master Clock requires a dedicated phone line; the Sub-Master Clocks can use shared lines.

Each Clock with the Phone Synchronization option can be set to make the synchronization phone calls automatically every 1, 2, 4, 6 or 12 hours, daily, or weekly as well as manually from a front panel push-button. Automatic re-dial is provided; a front panel LED and a bit in serial outputs indicate the status of the last call. After the phone connection is made, it takes only 10 to 15 seconds for the Clock to be set and the call terminated. To obtain accuracy to within 10 ms. of UTC, the Chrono- log Clock echoes all characters back to NIST to measure the round trip line delay. The on-time marker is then advanced to compensate for the delay.

In the event of a power failure or after initial start-up of the system, the Clock automatically synchronizes to UTC so that manual setting is never required.

Internal dip-switches provide for accepting or rejecting automatic Daylight Saving time changes, and setting Time Zone offset, Automatic Leap Second insertion, Area Code and External Line Access code (dial 9, for example).
